Study On The Criteria, Causes, And Methods Of Drug Addicts' Mate Selection

As a significant section of one's life, mate selection varies with culture and the mainstream values in different times. Anyway, no matter how it has changed, there is usually a certain law to follow. However, individual's selection behavior would face considerable difficulties and shows particularity when it conflicts with the mainstream values of the society and is labeled as deviance. From this perspective, this article attempts to illustrate the correlation between drug-taking and mate selection behavior, analyzing how drug-taking behavior affects individuals'mate selection, and the logic behind the mate selection behavior of drug addicts.Through in-depth interviews, participant observation and other qualitative research methods, the author carried out the study at PD Police Station in Longgang District of Shenzhen City. My findings show that there exists difficulties and conspicuous social exclusion among drug addicts in mate selection behavior: Firstly, because drug-taking is a behavior which violates the mainstream values, it is restricted and punished by the government and discriminated and repelled by the society. Thus they are excluded from getting married with people from normal groups. ; Secondly, drug addicts are also rejected within their own group. And gender difference affects whether drug addicts can successfully find a spouse outside their group. Thirdly, exclusion also exists between different sub-groups inside the group of drug addicts, such as new-drug addicts and Heroin addicts. Lastly, drug addicts tend to make rational choice in mate selection, considering economic rationality, safety rationality, and traditional rationality, of which economic rationality is the main consideration. And the sex-for-money, marriage-for-money exchange are common phenomena in their mate selection behavior. Meanwhile, there are also specious in causes and methods, such as their love is not there the beginning, but experience in the treatment of drug abuse or created, and their spouse under family influence, is conditional free mate.Theory of social roe, social exclusion and rational will give some explanation on the phenomina that we have said before.
