| Popular sports of chinese characteristics, which have been gradually created by people from all ethnic groups through history and life, are great treasures that can strengthen our bodies and pleasure our minds. They not only make us healthy and joyful, but also develop our wisdom and foster our capability, which will benefit us in lifetime. However, due to economic diversification, culture amalgamation, fast development of information and the challege and fusion of"elite sports"in recent years, popular sports culture are facing the severe crisis of being discarded, absorbed, disintegrated, altered wilfully and of disappearing. To protect folk sports items is of crucial necessity to the research of popular sports culture.This thesis uses the methods of document literature, questionnaire survey and mathematical statistics to analyse the status quo of collecting and promoting folk sports items in Huaian city, of which the conculsion is: the folk body-building items in Huaian tend to reduce, while the number of times of carrying out body-building items decreasing. The number of types of popular body-building items is less than ten years ago. According to an on-the-spot survey, the items of Huaian popular sports and body-building have stepped down from the original 28 to 22;The age of participants in Huaian popular sports and body-building items present the tendency of"high in the middle, and low on the two sides", while male participants slightly more than females; the education background of participants also shows the state of"high in the middle, and low on the two sides"; as to the profession of participants, most of them are staff members, workers in science, education and culture and students. The participation in those sports items is in close connection with time and economic level of participants; there are certain number of body-building facilities and school sports grounds in most communities in Huaian, but they are far from satisfying residents'needs, and more than 60 percent people being surveyed consider that the existing sports facilities do not meet their requirements; there are comparatively considerable popular sports and body-building activities held in Huaian, which almost account for 23 percent of the whole.Many instructors of popular sports items in Huaian are administrators and teachers in P.E. department. The quality of these instructors is to be improved; the management of popular sports items in Huaian has greatly enhanced compared with the previous situation, and people from cadres to civilians actively join in popular sports events, with close communication and proper regulation which lay a key foundation; there are various forms of popular sports items in Huaian, but we know little about some of them, in consequence their value can not be assessed and an overall sorting out is needed. The real and abundant content of Our ancestor's culture is to be discovered after several years.
