A survey of senior middle school students'writing ability has shown that middle school students are rather poor at English writing. And language learning researchers and English teachers have shown an increasing interest in studies of how to improve learners' writing ability.Based on some investigations of middle-school students' English writing, the author has made an empirical study by applying the theory of discourse analysis on how to improve students'writing ability. During the research, the author conducted some surveys and did a lot of experimental work. The results show that application of Discourse theory in English writing class is an effective way to improve students'writing ability.The thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter One introduces the background, the significance and purpose of the research as well as the research methods and it also displays the structure of the thesis. Chapter Two illustrates the definition of Discourse theory and makes a literature review. Chapter Three tells us what problems are with students'English writing and teacher's teaching methods. Chapter Four shows how experiments are done in the course of applying discourse theory to improving students' writing ability. In Chapter Five there is a conclusion of the experiments and analysis.
