| Vocabulary is the essential material to language communication. Vocabulary memorization has always been plagued by language learners. Although the mode of education has changed in recent years, the vocabulary instruction still used the traditional method. Mechanical memory is always used by students. With the shift of education, the amount of vocabulary is gradually increased for language learners. It is always a big problem for language learners to master more vocabulary. We can know from research, the effect of memorizing words was influenced by the ways of memorizing words. The students could memorize vocabulary effectively by using appropriate memory strategies. Based on the Depth-of-Processing(DOP) hypothesis proposed by Craik and Lockhart(1972), using encoding strategies help language learners to memorize words effectively. These researches embed these six vocabulary encoding strategies into normal class room activities.An experimental study was conducted in Liaoning Experimental School to determine whether the vocabulary encoding strategy training could help word memorization. The research questions are as follows:(1) How vocabulary encoding strategies can be embedded into regular classroom activities?(2) What is the effect of vocabulary encoding strategy instruction for learners? The vocabulary encoding strategies training was continued about 12 weeks. The students of experimental class and control class were all asked to complete the questionnaire before the test, pre-test, post-test and the questionnaire after the test. The students of experimental classmastered these six vocabulary encoding strategies gradually and used these strategies in their daily learning life. The materials of these questionnaires and tests were collected after the experiment and were analyzed by Statistic Package for Social Science(SPSS) 17.0. We can draw the following conclusion:Firstly, vocabulary encoding strategy could help students improve their awareness of using strategies to memorize words.Secondly, vocabulary encoding strategies can help students increase their interests of learning English.Thirdly, vocabulary encoding strategies could help teachers conduct vocabulary instruction effectively. |
