English writing is one of the basic skills that senior high school students need to master. According to the Standard of English course aimed at shanghai secondary and primary school students, senior high school students must meet the requirement that everyone can write a short passage of 120 words or more according to the directions. Besides, the passage should have a smooth flow; the sentences in the passage are well-connected and the ideas are logically arranged. It is obvious that a good writing demands rich content, good grammar and correct spelling. Another important characteristic of a good passage is coherence. In a coherent paragraph, the ideas and sentences are arranged logically and have a smooth flow that makes sense to the reader.Based on the coherence theory, this paper aims to find out the answers to the following questions:What's the relationship between the theory and teaching English writing in senior high school? What are the causes of students'failure in writing coherent passages? What are the practical methods in training students to write coherent passages? Are these teaching methods effective in improving students'writing ability? The research methods in the paper are literature research, questionnaire survey and experimental research. By these methods, relevant data are collected and analyzed before and after the experiment.According to the statistical results of the questionnaire the experiment, the students in experimental class achieved higher marks than those in control class after the experiment. My hypothesis of the experiment is verified. That is, the teaching experiment has focused on coherence and cohesion can raise the level of writing. Most of the students in experimental class have mastered some writing skills to achieve coherence in passages. Meanwhile, the students now put more emphasis on coherence when writing passages, trying their best to make their writing logical and smooth. Most of them can achieve higher writing scores than before.
