Writing is both subject and means of teaching in English teaching in middle schools. In recent years, as the reform of teaching English writing in middle schools has developed greatly, various good teaching methods have appeared, and they have helped a great deal in improving students' writing proficiency. However, most of these methods aim only at writing on the levels of words, phrases, sentences and grammar, and seldom treat writing at the discourse level. In this case, this thesis aims at approaching teaching strategies of English writing from the angles of view of planning and coherence, by means of reviewing the relevant literature, conducting questionnaire analysis and English-Chinese contrasts. The thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter One is to illustrate the necessity of planning and coherence based on the theory of discourse. Chapter Two is to analyze the problems in English writing in middle school. Chapter Three is to introduce and illustrate the strategies of planning and coherence. Chapter Four is to demonstrate some samples in planning and coherence in writing.
