The development of English writing ability can be considered as the most important part in the English teaching of Junior high school. However, both teachers and students seem to be suffered a lot from teaching and learning.Most students find that writing in English is very difficult though they have been learning English writing for many years. So how to arouse students'interest and motivation in English writing should be paid more attention to.It is known to us that the traditional assessment like the summative assessment has many disadvantages, which is against the idea advocated by the New English Curriculum Standard. Therefore, we should use other assessments in our English teaching. Formative assessment is the way that the author has applied in the process of teaching English writing. It is expected that students writing ability can be improved through the incentive assessment, self-assessment, peer-assessment and delay-assessment, which are all the ways of formative assessment.The major results of the research are as the following:The application of the formative assessment can greatly arouse students'interest and motivation in English writing. Students'writing ability can also be increased.However, the research also reveals some unsolved problems which remains to be further studied.The author hopes that this paper can lay the solid foundation for the future research.
