At the end of 20th century American higher education was under the pressure from public, society and economy.The change of function to scientific research has made the conflict between teaching and research more worse.With the popular of higher education, more students entre the university for a further study. On the contrary, there was a lack of teacher. Most of the teachers have little time to thinking their teaching work of undergraduate students. because of the heavy scientific research task,some of them even give up the teaching work. Consequently, more obvious problem are there on the higher education,less surport they got from the public.People began lose patience on the teaching in universities.In view of existing situation, American famous educationalist Ernest Boyer sketched out his suggestions in the report Scholarship Reconsidered.This report broaden the definition of scholareship,that is the intellectual work in teaching is scholareship,in order to improve the quality of teaching in the college and university.This idea was quickly applied in American Reaserch University. It make a success in campus development and academic career.The main body of this paper is divided into five parts. The first part of paper is introduction.It analyed the cause of research selection,the literatures review on the topic of "Scholarship of Teaching and Learning",the introduction of trains and ways of thought. The second part of the paper to tease the background of how SOTL growth on the effection of public, society and economy. In the third part,it give a specific narrative on the meaning of SOTL from many subjects, such as, the concept origin, correlated concepts, main character, evaluation standard etc.The fourth part is concern about the practice of SOTL program in American Reasearch University. It take the Indiana University Bloomington as an example to show how it find sup(?) from administration institution and faculty, how it give suggestion about the campus development, how it improve the faculty academic careers in teaching and how it promote the learning ability. At the end of the paper, it analyze the major experiences and problems of the application of SOTL program. It give us a real and good example to China's higher education.
