Vocabulary is one of the most important parts in language learning. Also, it has become one of the biggest obstacles in the learning progress. But the traditional way of vocabulary teaching and learning is time-wasting and ineffective. This paper tries to apply the achievement of modern metaphorical theory to exploring the inner course of second language vocabulary acquisition in English teaching and learning of high school. Firstly, a questionnaire is used for qualitative analysis to learn about the students'vocabulary methods and the problems during their learning. Secondly, the author tries to discuss the roles metaphor plays in the development of words. Lastly, an experiment is carried out between experimental and natural classes to test the effects metaphor has on the vocabulary learning, which includes a pre-test and a post-test. Also, a test is adopted to test the effects of the metaphoric model. The results show that metaphoric model can help the students have a better understanding of the core meaning of the words. Besides, students can easily master the words which convey more than one meaning. What's more, the students can have a better control of collocation of the words. At the same time, it can improve the competence of their accuracy and appropriateness in using the vocabulary.
