Objective: To investigate the self-injurious behaviors among secondary school students and figure out its influencing factors and provide evidences for prevention and early intervention of self-injurious behaviors among children. Methods: Wangjiang and Changfeng, two counties of Anhui Province, are selected as the target field. 3402 students from four secondary schools of Wangjiang and Changfeng counties were selected and investigated. The selected students voluntarily filled out the questionnaires with the help of the investigators. The questionnaire consisted of demographic characteristics, Children Nowicki-Stricland Internal-External Locus of Control Scale, Self-injurious Behavior Evaluation Questionnaire, and Symptom Checklist 90. On the basis of univariate analysis, we explored the influencing factors of self-injurious behaviors among several factors (gender, grade, the relationship with father, the relationship with mother, economical level, academic performance, left-behind, locus of control and the domains of SCL-90) through multinomial logistic regression. Results: The rate of the total self-injurious behaviors of the two counties is high. The group with the higher grade (P<0.01), the lower family-income (P<0.01), the worse academic performance (P<0.01), and the worse relationship with parents (P<0.01) has the higher rate of self-injurious behaviors. The rate of the self-injurious behaviors among left-behind middle school students is much higher than their non left-behind counterparts (P<0.01). What's more, the scores of the SCL-90 scale, the Nowicki-Strickland Locus of Control Scale for Children of left-behind secondary school students are much higher (P<0.01). It is illustrated from the ordinal regression results that the left-behind feature, the higher grade, the self-report worse relationship with farther, the external characteristic, somatization and hostile are the possible dangerous factors of the self-injurious behaviors among children. Conclusion: Self-injurious behaviors among secondary school students are severe. Besides, the left-behind secondary school students are more external than the non left-behind ones, and the self-report symptoms and the rates of the self-injurious behaviors are higher among them. May be the previous two elements are the dangerous factors of the latter one. The relationships between the left-behind characteristic, the external characteristic and the self-injury are significant. Countermeasures must be taken to protect the left-behind secondary school students and afford them better lives.
