The study of cooperative learning dates back to the late 19th century when Triplett in America, Turnery in Britain and Mayer in Germany studied the elements of competitive behaviour. From then on, many researchers have done research into the influence of cooperative learning on study. However, most researches are too general, and there is no specific research on the students of senior middle school.This thesis based on experiments and questionaires is to explore the relationship between vocabulary teaching and cooperative learning in ordinary senior middle schools.Firstly, the thesis introduces the background of vocabulary teaching and researches at home and abroad. Secondly, it demonstrates the purposes and the value of this research. Thirdly, it displays the procedure of the experiment. Fourthly, the thesis analyses the data collected from the expermients. At last, it draws some conclusions and makes some expectations.During the research, a series of experiments were carried out in two classes in WuHan Ethnic Senior Middle Shool, namely Class 10 and class 11. Class 11 was the experimental class. the students of which used cooperative learning method to study vocabulary while Class 10 was the control class, the students of which used taditional ways to study vocabulary in the meantime.The experiments last 4 months. Following the experiments was an questionaire. The data from the experiments and the questionaire shows that in vocabulary study cooperative learning method can achieve better effect than traditional method. In addition, teamwork can develop student's interest in studying English and thus motivate them to make progress.This reaseach is on the cooperative learning-centred English vocabulary instruction in Senior Middle School.The result shows that this method can help to improve the students' ability on vocabulary and it can also improve the students' English level.In addition.this method doesn't need high technology and is not field-limited. As a result, it can widely be adopted in senior middle schools.
