Currently, English education in a number of rural primary school in China is still faced with the lack of professional talents and material resources. Therefore, teaching achievements and the implementation of the new standards of English Course are both unsatisfactory there. In order to change this situation, in addition to relying on the national macro-policy to supply human and financial resources, the most effective way is to change teachers'teaching concepts and improve their teaching methods. English chants include English songs and rhythmic phrases. English chant teaching is one of a foreign language teaching methods. It is not only to arouse pupils'desire of learning English, to activate their multiple intelligence, but also to improve their language skills and scores of English proficiency test. It is easy to put into practical. A teacher could teach a chant only by a recorder and a book in the classroom. However, theory of English chant teaching mainly comes from abroad, and the design of English textbooks targeted toward students in city. There are still poor teaching conditions and conservative teaching ideas in many village primary schools. Therefore, to promote the use of English chant teaching is not easy in rural primary schools. This thesis is an empirical research aiming to analyze and verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the English chant teaching in village primary English class. Meanwhile, the author hopes it would provide some reference and guidance to the majority of primary English teachers and scholars. The feasibility of English chant teaching refers to the operability, which means teachers could take it into practice simply; and effectiveness of English chant teaching refers to the achievements of teaching, whether it could help to achieve teaching objectives and improve students'language comprehensive competence, including five aspects:language skills, language knowledge, attitudes, learning strategies and cultural awareness, corresponding to the consistent three-dimensional targets. In this thesis, experimental object is fourth grade students in two classes, one class were randomly selected as the experimental class, one for the control class. According to the proportion of pre-test scores and gender to choose totally 60 students, each class has 30 pupils. Experimental time lasted one semester, from September 1st,2010 to January 7th,2011. The author makes two questionnaire surveys for the experiment class before and after English chant teaching experiment, which aim to learn the changes of students' emotional attitude, learning strategies, knowledge and skills in English etc. Posttest is the final exam in this semester. By comparing of pretest and posttest scores to learn whether experimental class is over or flat test scores of control class. On the one hand, by analyzing the results of questionnaires surveys, the author finds that students hold positive attitudes toward English chant learning, and their interest, self-confidence are promoted, and their autonomous learning abilities, language knowledge and skills are all improved, etc. On the other hand, pre-test scores and data shows that English proficiency of the control classes are slightly higher than the experimental class. And English levels of the two classes are both poor, such as low passing rate and low average score. Posttest grades of the two classes are both increased with a passing rate of 100%. In addition, test results of the experimental class are better than the control classes. It is concluded that compared with conventional teaching, English chant teaching is more effective. As a teacher should keep pace with the times and improve his level of teaching ability and teaching concepts. However, this study has such limitations as the sample is too small, and study was not thorough enough. The author hopes this study can give English teachers and researchers some reference and inspiration, and can help them refine the theory and improve application of English chant teaching.
