| Grammar teaching plays a great role in the English teaching of middle school. It is generally considered in English Teaching that there are enormous rules and they are too complicated. Here comes the problem, how to use a simple approach to explain and teach the complicated grammar items. This paper aims to find a simple approach to the teaching of non-finite verbs. A contrastive experiment is conducted to testify this simple approach which is compared with the common approach to non-finite verbs teaching. This paper is based on Chomsky's Minimalist Programme, presenting the principles of this simple approach to non-finite verbs. The author worked as an intern teacher in three middle schools (a Junior Middle School and two Senior Middle Schools), and interviewed plenty of English teachers from different grades to get the common approach that they adopt when they teach non-finite verbs. The experiment is conducted on the foundation that they haven't used the simple approach. To testify the feasibility of this simple approach and observe the different results in one junior middle school and one senior middle school, the author carried out an experiment in those two schools. The experimental process is the same in those two schools. The experimental class and control class (EC and CC for short) were selected on the foundation that they didn't have any significant differences in the pre-test. Then post-test 1 (temporary results) was carried out immediately after the experiment. After a month in the investigated junior and senior middle schools, post-test 2 (long-term result) was carried out. A great number of exercises were done after post-test 1 to make the students consolidate the non-finite verbs by using the simple approach in the EC and by common approach in the CC. The data were collected and analyzed. The Independent Sample Test was used to analyze post-test 1 between the EC and CC. The same work was done to analyze post-test 2 between the EC and CC. The Independent Sample Test aims to contrast the simple approach and the common approach. The Paired Sample Test is used to analyze the difference between post-test 1 and post-test 2 of the EC, aiming to contrast the temporary results and long-term results of this simple approach. The results prove that this simple approach can get better teaching results than the common approach both in the two investigated schools. The simple approach can get better teaching results both in the temporary results and long-term result. There are no significant differences between the long-term results and temporary results both in the two investigated schools. It can be found that the simple approach is more effective than the common approach, i.e. it can finish the teaching tasks in a shorter time than the traditional approach. Meanwhile, the flawness of this experiment is found through the experiment, so it needs improving in future research. |
