Vocabulary is the very foundation of learning a foreign language. The size of vocabulary that one master will certainly affect his language level. Research on vocabulary learning strategies has been paid much attention to. Many scholars have made studies into vocabulary learning strategies. However, the studies are mostly concerned with graduates and postgraduates. Up to now, only a few researches have been done into vocabulary learning strategies and effects of the VLS training on the students in senior schools.Senior students are different from college students in language proficiency, which makes them use VLS with their own characteristics. One of the purposes of the thesis is to get a clear picture of what strategies senior students Use; the other is to provide strategy use profiles for those senior high school teachers who are interested in strategy training.The thesis is aimed at describing the overall usage of vocabulary learning strategies, the difference of the employment of the vocabulary strategies between the two genders, and also the relationships between the vocabulary learning strategies and the vocabulary achievement and English achievement. At last, this paper will give some suggestions concerning the problems. A vocabulary learning strategy questionnaire consisting of twenty-six questions is the basic instruments in the study.117 grade one students from two different senior schools in TianJin took part in it. The result shows that the sampled students use cognitive, meta-cognitive and social/affective strategies. They prefer to use less-demanding cognitive strategies and convenient strategies.On the basis of their characteristics, some suggestions on teaching vocabulary are put forward to improve vocabulary teaching and learning in high schools.
