This thesis discusses the regulations as well as the teaching of the neutral tone. And by this, I try to regulate the confused marking of the neutral tone widely distributed in some Chinese dictionaries and teaching materials. The first section examines the definitions, acoustic characters. And tone pitch of the neutral tone. The difference in defining the neutral tone lies in: 1 .whether the neutral is a special thing in Modem Standard Chinese; 2.the differences among the neutral tone, the soft voice and the soft pronunciation. We ordinarily think that the intensity of the neutral tone is very weak. But experiments show that not all the intensity of the neutral tone get weaker, just the energe of the neutral tone word s last part gets weaker than the ordinary word. Experiments also show, it is the voice-pitch and voice-length that make the neutral tone syllable indistinct. About the neutral tone pitch, the academic circles have two representative views: 1. The neutral tone pitch differs when it appears behind the four tones in turn; 2. Although the voice-length of the neutral tone syllable is very short, the tone pattern can be perceived. The neutral tone pitch has two types; I .the neutral tone words can be read in brief, low-drop tone when they appear behind the ~ tone, the 2nd tone and the 4~ tone, the tone pitch is 31; the neutral tone words can be read in brief, half rd high-smooth tone. When they appear behind the 3 tone, the tone pitch is 44.Seeing from the experiment results, I prefer the last view. The second section discusses the causes of the neutral tone and generalizes the regulations of its appearance. I think there are three causes of the neutral tone: l.a lot of disyllabic Chinese words come into being; 2.the physiology nature of the neutral tone; 3.the request of language rhythm. I generalize the regulations of its appearance in eight aspects. The third section discusses the standard and arrangement of the neutral words in Modern Standard Chinese. Firstly, I put forward the principles in regulating the neutral tone words (including efficiency principle and habit principle) Then, I go on to discuss how to regulate the alone-arranging neutral tone words in Modern Chinese Dictionary and the neutral tone words which are often used in Modem Standard Chinese (spoken and written speech). In doing so, I apply the theory that I put forward above. The fourth section deals with the Chinese teaching practice. In middle school and primary school, I give some suggestions on how to teach the neutral tone words in class. I hope these suggestions will be helpful. There is an introduction before the fourth section. In this introduction I discuss the present situation about the neutral tone words taught in middle and primary school. Following the fourth section are concluding remarks. In the conclusion, I summarize the article briefly.
