English is becoming more and more important with the development of information society and the globalization of economy. As a carrier of information, English is used worldwide in numerous domains of human life. And many countries now put emphasis on English teaching in their basic education period, and regard it as the key making of a citizen in literacy-oriented education.The Intercultural Lexis Shock (ILS) hampers reading comprehension competence of the senior high school students. The purpose of the research is to find out the ILS, and to bring forward corresponding countermeasures.Based on a survey and a language test among the 360 students in 8 middle schools around Chongqing, the author makes an analysis on the representations in which the ILS of senior high school students greatly effects their reading comprehension competence, finds out the types of misunderstanding caused by the ILS and the types of intercultural lexis resulting in ILS, and then analyzes them through comparative and inductive approaches.Following the modern education and cultural notions, the author suggests some corresponding countermeasures to prevent the ILS of senior high school students, which are, building up cultural consciousness and enhancing culture lead-in; utilizing cultural comparison approach; increasing reading input and channels and making full use of culture dictionaries.Another purpose of the research is to set a profound ground for the development of English reading comprehension competence. The paper also attaches importance to the acquirement of Intercultural Communication Consciousness and Competence in middle school English teaching.
