Leisure,Modernity And Self-identity

The author purposes an attempt to provide an efficient perspective for the sociological experience studies of leisure. Based on probing into modernity of leisure, the author introduces Giddens 's modernity thought in order to emphatically analyse the relations between leisure and self-identity in the background of modernity. It is regarded as one of significant perspectives of leisure sociology. Through explaining and constituting individual daily life, expert system and ideological culture, modernity makes individual self-identity be in a prevalent predicament. This paper considers that leisure, as one of self-choice and self-actualization life styles, is one significant mechanism of self-identity in the prevalent predicament. The unique social scene of leisure offers particular chance for molding and representing individual self-identity. At one time, in the life field of leisure, creating of self-identity may be negated and distorted under pressure and restrictions of the mass society. Thus, it may cause alienation.
