A Study Of Leisure Alienation In The Perspective Of Modernity

Modernity has given rise to the modern leisure, at the same time it is the root of the alienation of modern leisure, but in the tension structure within modernity we can acquire some positive factors of overcoming leisure alienation. This is the basic framework of this paper. Within this framework, we define the authentic leisure and the alienation leisure first. We believe that we should understand leisure from the perspective of system theory and dialectical process:on the one hand, leisure is a unique life experience which people obtained in a specific period of time, through a certain activities and interactive relationship with the environment, it is the system formed by the subject, recreational activities and the environment; on the other hand, leisure is a succession and a constant process of "becoming human".There is an internal consistency between the authentic leisure and the human’s authentic existence. Alienated leisure is deviation from the authentic leisure and human’s authentic existence. To overcome the leisure alienation, we must first explore its root within modernity. This paper argues that the instrumental rationality of modernity derogation of human nature, the capital logic’s comprehensive control of leisure, and the people’s self lost are the root of leisure alienation. But from the tension structure of modernity, especially from the aesthetic modernity, we can get some inspirations to overcome leisure alienation. Based on our understanding of the authentic leisure, combined with what we reveal aesthetic modernity for inspiration to overcome leisure alienation, we try to put forward some principle of overcoming leisure alienation from three aspects of leisure from itself, individual existence and macro social existence.Modernity is continuing, leisure alienation is also the fact. Although modernity is the root of leisure alienation, but that does not mean the leisure under the condition of modernity is necessarily alienation, there is hope that overcome the alienation, modernity is also cannot be rejected.
