The fin swimming is an athletic sports developed widely in the world. The results are depended on the athlete's physiological function, technique and hydrodynamic performance of sport equipments. The development of physiological function is limited. The improvement of sport skill and hydrodynamic performance of sport equipments is the key. To improve the sport skill of the fin swimming and the way of training, it is necessary that the study on the hydrodynamic performance of the fin swimming is enhanced and the hydrodynamic performance of the fin swimming is improved. This thesis studied the hydrodynamic performance of the fin swimming by the way of numerical and experimental method. The unsteady lifting surface method was used to calculate the hydrodynamic performance of the fin swimming. A horseshoe-vortex is distributed on the hull surface and vortices flow from the surface of the outrigger, running together with the hull. The agreement between present numerical results and other calculating results of the pitching and heaving flat plate indicates that the present work is valuable. The thesis studied the characteristics of the fin swimming by the theory of potential flow. The unsteady lifting surface method is used to study the propulsive mechanism of the fin swimming from the viewpoint of hydrodynamics. The hydrodynamic performance of the male, female Russian and domestic swimming fin were calculated. It was shown that the hydrodynamic performance of the fin swimming was changed with the frequency and amplitude. Therefore, the mechanism of the fin swimming can be found. It is important to study the hydrodynamic performance of the fin swimming by the experimental method. The experiment of the hydrodynamic performance of the male, female Russian and domestic fin swimming were carried out in the circulating water channel. The effect of the frequency on the hydrodynamic performance of the fin swimming is discussed. This study on the hydrodynamic performance of the fin swimming is helpful to guide the training and match of the fin swimming.
