The roles played by social sports instructor(here in the after abbreviated as SSI), as organizer and transmitter of social sports, have a profound influence on the further development of social sports to be socialized, scientific, industrialized and legalized. Especially, with the issuing and the carrying out of the National Program for the People's Body-Building, the cultivation of SSIs and the performance of their functions in the people's body-building will become particularly important. The formal training and education of SSI in our country originated in the year of 1995. Since then, with the common efforts of both national and local administrative departments of sports, quite satisfactory achievements have been made in the development of SSI, whose quantity and quality are adapting to our country's sports development. Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi province, can never get isolated from the overall climate of our country on the one hand, however, shows some conspicuous regional features on the other hand. After some interviews with those in charge of the management of SSIs in the Sports Bureaus of Shanxi Province and Taiyuan city, it is learned that there are also some problems with the SSIs of Taiyuan. In the light of these problems, this thesis, based on a sustainable development of social sports, makes an investigation into the current situation of the SSIs of Taiyuan urban districts with the methods of literature review, social investigation and statistics and the results show that: (1) There are totally 1884 SSIs of various levels in Taiyuan urban districts. On the whole, this number is rather small and the proportion between the various levels is unbalanced as well as the proportion of gender at each level. To be specific, at the national level, the number of male is larger than that of female, and female instructors are mainly assembled at the second and the third levels; (2) In the aspect of age, the proportion of the young (below 40) is higher than that of the middle-aged and the old (above 40); (3) The educational level of the SSIs of Taiyuan is quite low. Those with high educational level (above the vocational education) account for 29.0% of the whole instructors investigated, and the remained 71.0% are those with middle or low education; (4) In the respect of vocation, professional sports practitioners are the most (35.7%), and then in a sequence are retirees (19.2%), teachers (18.9%), carders (16.8%), enterprise employees (8.0%) and the others (1.4%); (5) The instructing span mainly centers on two periods: below five years (48.2%) and from eleven to twenty years (24.7%); (6) The items instructed are in a decreasing sequence Taiji (55.7%), exercising and dancing (46.3%), Qigong (34.6%) and Ping Pang (12.9%), tennis (10.8%) and ball catch (8.1%); (7) For the SSIs of Taiyuan, the presence per week above seven times takes up 40.3% and the duration of instruction up to 90 minsaccounts for 50.0%; (8) The instructors are mainly engaged with their work in mornings (43.8%) and in afternoons or evenings (42.7%). The fields are at squares or parks (43.7%), stadiums (25.2%) and exercise clubs (17.5%); (9)The ways in which they offer their instructions include paid service (17.8%), free service (54.6%) and that both paid and free (27.6%); (11) In the aspect of the training content valued by SSIs, those of high level are inclined to the academic, organizing and managing knowledge of social sports, while those of low level are apt to the basic knowledge of exercising and the techniques of specific sports items. Most instructors advocate increasing the training on techniques (88.8%) and hold that the instruction time is not sufficient. As for the diversity of instruction ways and assessment, most of them are in favor of technique test (63.7%).With a comprehensive analysis of the results obtained from the investigation, it is concluded that the factors restricting the work of SSIs of Taiyuan urban districts are: (1) funds invested is insufficient; (2) the material conditions such as sports fields and fa...
