Where there is teaching, there is testing. English testing occurs simultaneously with English teaching and plays an important role in English teaching. With the economical globalization and the advent of knowledge economy and information age, English learning has become an upsurge. All kinds of English courses are springing up. And there are millions of various levels of students are learning English. How are these students getting along with English learning? What are the effects of these English courses? Therefore, objective, accurate and just evaluation is needed, which is English language testing(Yang Huizhong, 2001: F24).Language testing is an integrative cross-science subject, which involves many research fields, such as linguistics, linguistic methodology, learning theories, psychometrics and so on. An English language teacher should not only have rich academic knowledge, rich teaching experience but also can design test items well and master a lot of basic statistic methods as well. In language testing, he or she should be able to examine the quality of tests and give scientific interpretations and analysis to the tests.Nowadays, people pay more attention to testing especially at the stage of elementary education, but they know less testing theories and some other related knowledge. So the testing results have been less analyzed and have been short of scientific interpretations to the test scores. In order to solve those problems, this thesis is based on a case study of the 2002 Senior High School Entrance Exam in Huangzhou District, Huanggang City, Hubei Province. By applying the principles of language testing and using thecomputer-aided analysis of the test, it gives a detailed analysis and evaluation of the test along the criteria of language testing and the English Curricular Criteria for Full-time Compulsory Education Common Middle School. This thesis has been concerned with some specific methods of analysis. First, the main points of the test have been presented and the data from the candidates' answers have been counted up. In terms of the sequence of the test, every test item has been analyzed including listening comprehension, English knowledge usage, reading comprehension, and writing ability. And then some item variables such as item difficulty, item discrimination and reliability of test have been computed. In addition, the relationship between objective and subjective items is discussed. The scores of the candidates have been illustrated in scientific ways. At last, a scientific conclusion has been reached and some constructive suggestion has been provided.According to the analysis and interpretations, this thesis reveals the laws of language testing. And it is of great importance for the further improvement of test-designing and teaching methodology.
