Motor development has always sustained in the whole life of individual and it is animportant area of individual development. It closely connects with the developments of physical, brain and nervous system and it will affect the formation of infant and children's cognitive spaceconcept and the development of social interaction abilities.Gross motor involving the torso, limbs and other major muscle groups, is the campaignskills. It's the main element of basic movements and very closely associated with sports activities. The critical period of gross motor development is childhood when the children grow rapidly.Gross motor development in this period affects directly not only the development of campaignability, but also the development of cognitive, psychological and other aspects in the future. Thenormal state of motor development can make children have more opportunity to participate inmany activities and to exchange and contact with other children. It will promote children toestablish self-confidence, a mental health and to foster a good social adaptability. If the gap ofgross motor development in the critical period couldn't be found, the opportunity remediedtimely will be lost and the child may have deficiencies and shortcomings during exersing infuture. Even though training and remedy are undertaken, the results will not be satisfied. Therefore, it is very important and necessary to concern the children's gross motor development. Many tests of motor development have been widely applied. While in our country lackingmethods, the teachers only assess children's gross motor development by their own experiencesin daily life. In fact the rusults are not being scientific and systematic. The Test of Gross MotorDevelopment (TGMD) was first published to fill a void in assessing the motor behavior fromages 3 to 10 by Dale A. Ulrich of Michigan State University in 1985. The second edition, revisedin 2000 (TGMD-2), has been confirmed a good reliability and validity in a multiculturalenvironment. It has also been introduced to the Taiwan region in order to research andapplication. The TGMD-2 has two subtests. The Locomotor subtest measurs run, horizontal jump, hop, leap, gallop, slide and the Object Control subtest measures stationary dribble, catch, kick, striking a stationary ball, overhand throw, underhand roll. The test is scored with the standards ofevery action and the children's completion of motors to judge gross motor development. To explore the reliability and validity of TGMD-2 implement at home, the author using thedocumental data, investigation visit and expert consultation to know about the children's grossmotor development, and using empirical, video analysis and datum statistics to test 511 childrenfrom 3 to 10 of Shandong Province, know our children's gross motor development and the statusof different ages and gender, and rating the raters reliability, internal-consistency reliability,test-retest reliability, content validity, construct validity and criterion validity. The results are:1. Gross motor development is one kind of the campaign skills which developes in earlierchildhood. It has important influence on the developments of children's psychological aspectsand social communicative abilities. The TGMD-2, developed by Ulrich, is designed to assess thegross motor functioning in children 3 through 10 years of age. It has been confirmed a goodreliability and validity in a multicultural environment, with a wide range of applications. So it isvery necessary to study the feasibility of application of the Test of Gross Motor Development-2in China.2. It has been founded through the test of 511 children in our country that the Locomotorsubtest is much better than the Object Control. The skills such as run, slide, and kick grasp muchbetter, the skills such as hop, striking a stationary ball, and overhand throws grasp worse.3. The capabilities of children's gross motor development improve continuously withchildren's growth, and the different motors in different age groups show different characteristics. It doesn't exist gender differences in Locomotor subtest. Although significant gender differencesexist in skills such as kick, striking a stationary ball of the Object Control subtest, boys gethigher score than girls, there don't exsit gender differences in general.4. TGMD-2 has a good reliability. The reliability coefficients of different scorers are0.860-0.922. The internal consistencies coefficients of different motors are 0.709-0.925, theage-specific internal consistency coefficient are 0.755-0.930, the gender-specific are 0.920-0.962.The test-retest reliability coefficients are 0.871-0.948.5. TGMD-2 has a good validity. The expert evaluation and the analysis of discriminationand difficult show a good content validity. The correlation and coefficient between motors andthe factor analysis show a good construct validity. The scores of PE and the teachers' assessmentby experiences also prove a good criterion validity.6. TGMD-2 is a reliable and effective tool for practical tests with fertile content, modestlength, and simple operation besides it is grasping. It could be tried to apply in our country.
