With the English curriculum reform across the whole nation, the activity approach has enjoyed increasing popularity among teachers and scholars. In the activity-based classroom the students are encouraged to learn by doing. This paper mainly adopts documental method, comparative method, experimental method and so on. After an analysis of common characteristics of the activities in western countries and their limitations on Chinese students in the traditional education environment, great efforts have been made to employ an effective activity approach with Chinese characteristics. It suggests that creative use of the textbook and harmonious classroom interaction should keep high concern in the use of the approach. The paper puts its focus on the application of the activity approach in the reading course. The paper also offers the guidelines for the design of the activities. Finally on the basis of a series of experiments several concrete suggestions are given for the activity approach in the future.
