To improve the students' communicative competence in EFL class teaching should be one of the teaching aims. Based upon the theories of the communicative competence by Hymes ,Widdowson, Canale and Sivignon etc. and the theory about class teaching by Harmer and Littlewood, the present thesis aims at the improvement of the students' communicative competence in EFL class teaching, attempting to find the significant methods to make EFL class teaching more effective. In the experiment, two teaching sequences (EAS(A) & ESA) are separately used in the Experimental Class and the Control Class, three tests were carried out in both classes. After all the data was collected, the writer used SPSS to analyze the data and found that the communicative competence of the students in both classes has been improved. The performances of the students in the Experimental Class are better than those in the Control Class. So the EAS(A) Boomerang sequence is more effective than ESA Straight Arrows sequence.The present thesis is made up of five parts.Part 1: the purpose and the significance of the present study are introduced through analyzing the current situation of the students' communicative competence in China.Part 2: the literature review of the relevant SLA theory, the full concept of communicative competence, the theory of class elements 'ESA', the theory about arranging activities in the class to improve the students' communicative competence.Part 3: the rationale for the study.Part 4: the present study, at first, the hypotheses are given, they are 1. EAS (A) Boomerang sequence will be more effective on improving the students' communicative competence than ESA Straight Arrows sequence.2. The students' communicative competence will be improved a lot through class teaching. Next ,the detailed introduction and description of the research method, procedure are depicted. Then the writer deals with the data collection and analysis. SPSS 11.5 is used toprocess the data.Part 5: the conclusion, implication and limitation.
