With me issue of New English Course Standard, senior middle school students are requked to reach a higher level in reading, but in reality reading is a big headache for students. Research has shown mat inference plays an important role in the NMET readmg comprehension. Based on the relevant theories and researches, the author ratted the hypothesis mat inferential reading strategy training could help senior middle school students improve their reading comprehension. This thesis is made up of four chapters.In the fist chapter, the significance of the research, related readmg theories, the procedure of the research and the structure of the thesis are introduced.Chapter two provides the theoretical support for the research, which includes readmg theories, reading levels, reading models and readmg strategies. Inference mainly belongs to the interpretive level almough it is essential at all the readmg levels. The interactive model is employed in inferential reading almough the top-down model plays a very important rok.Chapter three is the research, which consists of the hypothesis, subjects instruments, experiment and data analysis. Before the training me experimental class and the control class were bom given the pretest and after the training they took the posttest. Three successive one-month stages make up the training, in which the method employed was strategy-baaed instruction followed by independent practice. The two tests and the interviews were analyzed with the help of Excel.In the last chapter, discussion, the hypothesis is confirmed; major findings andlimitations of the research together with suggestions for further researches were involved. The training not only helped improve the students' reading comprehension but also helped foster their confidence in English study. The teacher also felt encouraged, mtendmg to carry out other strategy trainings in future. The author suggested mat in similar trainings, the materials should not contain too many unfamiliar words and some irrelevant information is necessary, further researches can focus on the rote of inference in listening in senior middle school...
