It's one of the key issues to design a powerful system for teachers to answer students' questions come across in the process of learning a Web-based course and to give students effective instructions. It's safe to say that it's hard for a Web-based course to fulfill its functions without a system for answering questions or just with a bad one even when other parts are excellent.The system for answering question in Web-based courses can be classified as synchronous one and asynchronous one based on whether or not the teacher answers the questions immediately. There are some systems in which, computers with artificial intelligence technology answer questions other than teachers. The research on the system for answering questions is not quite sufficient yet; some shortcomings exist.This dissertation analyzes the problems that exist in the present system for answering questions, discusses the Web technology, Java platform, and NetMeeting software, completes the system for answering questions in Web-based courses in J2EE platform. The system has the characteristics of, 1) real-time-interaction between teachers and students, 2) diversity of interaction methods including text chat, whiteboard, and file transfer, as well aspoint-to-point audio and video, even sharing application programs, 3) a couple of methods to express ideas and transfer information, 4) combinations of synchronous and asynchronous interactions, with which teachers put the mostly asked questions into FAQ area for students to browse, query as well as put forward new questions, 5) working with inspiration system, in which teachers mark their students performance and record the points, in the purpose of improving their learning enthusiasm. The dissertation also discusses the conditions and methods of application of the system.The main contribution of this dissertation would be the combination of synchronous and asynchronous interactions and cooperation with inspirations system in the design and realization of the system for answering questions, which hopefully, to some extent, would help people in the field of educational technology think more.
