Daniel C. Gilman was a famous American higher educator. He graduated from Yale College and was deeply edified by the traditional college ideas. Then he went to study in Berlin University and there he accepted the Idea of Germany University. When he came back, he worked in Sheffield Science School, in the University of California and in the Johns Hopkins University, and these experiences influenced the formation of his profound Ideas of Higher Education.Gilman's Ideas of Higher Education mostly embodied in the building of the Johns Hopkins University. Under his leadership, this university became the first modern research university in America. And it not only became the foundation of the system of the modern university, but also promoted the great change of the ideas of American Higher Education.This dissertation is to discuss Gilman's Ideas of Higher Education from five aspects: the Idea of the University, the Idea of the Graduate Education, the Idea of the Undergraduate Education, the Idea of Academic Freedom and the Idea of the Faculty, and finally conclude the characters and influences of his ideas.
