Software industry is the outcome of social development in this Information Age. Nowadays software spreads throughout our society, affecting all aspects of our life. With the development of modern network technology, applied software has completely changed people's life style in the 21st century.Modern software formation is a complex system engineering. It requires that the designers should strictly obey the principles and norms of software engineering when building models for information system. Modeling is a kind of abstract activity. The models describe some basic designs of software and become the "blueprint" for producing software products. The modeling is very important, for it will determine whether we can build the system successfully or not. As an old saying goes, a person should sharpen his weapon before he performs the task. And UML (Unified Modeling Language), which is the best modeling language of modern software engineering, is the sharpened weapon in hand.With the technology of Internet and digital satellite communication as the support, modern distance education boasts great freedom in time and space, rich shared resources, open system and convenient cooperation. Because of these advantages, the modern distance education with Internet as the major means becomes inevitable. Thereby, to turn the traditional teaching activities onto the network and to make lifetime education possible by using modern information technology are urgent and significant.This paper gets the development of information system of Fujian education of the Beijing Jiaotong University modern distance education as the background of the project. Here we use standard modeling language UML to design both static and dynamic models of software system, including use case diagram, static diagram, behavior diagram, interactive diagram and implementation diagram, and then implement the information system with Visual Studio.NET (new-generation softwaredevelopment platform of Microsoft Inc) based on the above models. This software system has four main modules, including the management of student information, teaching and examination and system extension. It applies the architecture of both B/S (Browser/Server) and C/S (Client/Server), and the object-oriented software is reusable and defensible. Now this system has been applied on the network of Fujian Open Education Center to help to deal with the daily management work. We have learned from users that this system has provided an excellent educational platform for teachers and students and helped to deal with daily teaching work in all ways. At the same time, it meets the requirements of managing the teaching information of the center, help managers to reduce mistakes and improve efficiency in their work. So it has great application value.During the process of system modeling, we summarize some optimized experience of static and dynamic modeling according to some practical experience and relevant references. And it therefore has the value for theoretic research.In the end, this paper summarizes the development work of modern distance education information system of Beijing Jiaotong University. Furthermore, we make a prospect for the future work.
