As the reform of courses on elementary education comes into practice, the situation of using only one kind of teaching material for the syllabus has been changed. The time when we use various courses and teaching materials has come and teaching material evaluation becomes very important because teaching material is the guarantee of a course syllabus, the basis of teaching activities for the teachers and the source of acquiring knowledge, skill and learning strategy for the students. Teaching material evaluation can not only help to put the syllabus into practice but also provide advices for the education administration to compile or decide teaching materials. Especially, it can help teachers to adapt or adjust the materials in the course of teaching and give teachers teaching guidance and students a great help with their study.The English teaching material LOOK AHEAD was taken from Britain in 1996. In order to improve the teaching capacity of the teachers in middle school in our country, LOOK AHEAD was experimented in 12 foreign language schools in our country in 1996. It was experimented in our school (Foreign Language School Attached to Guangxi Normal University) in 2000, too. According to the theory and the principles of teaching material evaluation, this thesis analyses the teaching purpose, contents, learning strategy, learning method, activity arrangements, and all the elements that relate to the materials such as teachers, students, society of the materials to summarize its characteristics, its ideology and its culture to make sure if the teaching materials can be in keeping with the principles of textbook evaluation. The thesis shows that LOOK AHEAD is a valuable teaching material duo to lots of merits. This material borrowed from abroad is the only copy that ranks from elementary grade to high grade. Its topics come from real life and its language is authentic. Students can learn and practice authentic English from the situational arrangements of the text LOOK AHEAD. This is a practical, systematic teaching material with pure English, abundant cultures and overall functions. The contents in the textbook can be in keeping with the principles of textbook evaluation.As the fact shows that English teaching in middle school has been greatly influenced by the use of LOOK AHEAD. First, LOOK AHEAD brings the progress and improvement of our English teachers. In the course of their teaching, they achieve a new idea of teaching. They never consider the English teaching only as a simple language teaching. They change it to be enpowered education. The purpose of English teaching is to develop students' capacity. Both teachers and students can profit and improve their capacity in teaching activities.Second, LOOK AHEAD develops the students' quality and capacity. Because of plenty of topics and great amount of knowledge which is widely used in our real life in the materials, students interest in the material is stimulated. After learning the books of LOOK AHEAD, they know how to learn initiatively. Their abilities of listening, speaking, reading and writing have been improved. At last, LOOK AHEAD brings the change of the mode of our English teaching. The teachers change the traditional teaching mode into the students' initiative learning. They put the process of students' learning into the process of finding, analyzing and solving problems.In addition, this thesis also states the revising idea to the materials. Because of the situational topic arrangements of the materials, all the grammar items appear according to the situational needs. Although there is an item DISCOVERING LANGUAGE in the material, it's hard for teachers to explain about all the grammar systematically and it's easy for the beginners to get confused when they are studying. To solve this problem, this thesis provides a good solution: supplementing the grammar reference in the appendix, Supplementing more regular rules and illustrative sentences to the grammar reference, trying to help the students clearly know what they learn.Th...
