As the knowledge economy era comes, there's a great demand for creative intellectuals for the social development. Therefore, to foster students' development of their innovative spirit and ability to innovate becomes one of the important goals in school education. Being a main subject in the secondary education, mathematics plays an important role in fostering students' innovative ability. The matches in mathematics brings about a health competitive mechanism to the secondary education and it's generally acknowledged that the competitive matches in mathematics essentially intrigue students' interest and help to develop the cognitive structure and cultivate the explorative ability. However, people have different ideas towards the present "Olympic mathematics". How should we face it and what attitude should we take? It's necessary for us to make a systematic analysis of the characteristics and teaching model of the competitive mathematics. The five characteristics of the competitive mathematics are as follows: the inheritance of culture, the novelty of proposition, the researchableness of problems, the creativity of methods and the high difficulty of questions. The explorative method is mainly adopted in the competitive mathematics and it includes the four steps: posing questions, probing questions, discussing questions and reviewing questions. Based on a survey, this article puts forward that competitive mathematics can also help to develop students' thinking ability and mould students' character and thus promote their innovative ability in mathematics.
