This paper presents a web-based self-access system designed to train listening and the results of an experiment carried out with this system as after-class tasks for junior sophisters in English Department, Fuzhou Teachers College, Jiangxi Province. Progresses in listening and intensive reading of the control group (95 students in traditional mode) and that of the experimental group (91 students in self-access mode) are compared by using a pre- and post-test. Those studying in Self-access mode made significant improvement in listening while no significant improvement in intensive reading. Furthermore, a questionnaire survey was done to students' perception of listening strategies.
