At present, a considerably large number of Chinese high school students are stillsoaked in the ocean of endless written exercises in learning English. There are onlyvery few who can communicate effectively with people from English-speakingcountries. As we all know, language is useless unless it is used in communication, andEnglish is of no exception. Unfortunately, in Chinese high schools, more emphasisseems to have been laid on the usage of English rather than on the actual use of thelanguage. Language structure outweighs its meaning in the teaching and learningprocess. The phenomenon of "dumb English", which refers to the inability tocommunicate in authentic environment after learning English for quite a long time, has not been eliminated.Adopting theories of communicative competence and practice of communicativeapproaches along with researches of second language acquisition, this thesis isintended to make an exploration into the developing of communicative competence ofChinese high school students with regard to oral English.
