Due to the importance of oral communicative competence among the four basic skills in English teaching, considerable attention has been paid to the cultivation of oral communicative competence. This thesis intends to present some effective methods to develop the oral communicative competence of middle school students in English teaching, based on the Communicative Approach as well as the theory of context by Firth and Halliday. A brief review is first made to introduce the theoretical basis and the characteristics of Communicative Approach as well as the theory of context by Firth and Halliday. Then a questionnaire is made to find what prevents the oral communicative competence of middle school students in current English teaching. Finally, some effective teaching methods are introduced to improve the oral communicative competence of students based on both Communicative Approach and teaching practice. The teaching practice proves that oral communicative competence of the students can be improved more quickly by using the effective teaching methods.
