A new era of curriculum reform of our national elementary education is bound to follow the issue of Curriculum Reform Outline of Elementary Education (trail) and the carryout of National Curriculum Standard. Many countries focus on cultivating students' inquiry ability. Recently, a new round reform of our elementary education courses adopting the method of "self-determination, cooperating, inquiry", stressing on cultivating students' independence. As an integration of natural science, to develop inquiry teaching has more significant meaning in teaching science.This paper introduces the situation of inquiry teaching abroad and the current condition of science teaching in our country, it analyzes the essence, characteristics and the aim of inquiry teaching, and also analyzes the significance of adopting this teaching method. Meanwhile, it expounds the theoretical basis of inquiry teaching from the perspectives of leaning strategy of metacognition, leaning theory of constructionism, meaningful learning, subjectivity education ane so on.In the practice of inquiry teaching in courses related to science, this paper expounds the status of students and teachers and the function of teachers in the practice, it puts forward the basic steps of inquiry teaching and analyzes the problems exist in the process.
