In 1920's, the diffusion of John Dewey's educational thought in China is a remarkable highlight in modern culture communication between China and western countries. In order to improve our ability of assimilating alien cultures and accelerate the development of Chinese culture, it's necessary for us to retrospect this historic episode again.Besides the preface, this dissertation mainly consists of four parts.Part two, firstly analyzes historical background of the rising of John Dewey's educational thought of pragmatism, secondly retrospect the diffusion process of educational thought of pragmatism in China. During this process, two kinds of "Participants" and one kind of "Media" were involved in. The so-called two kinds of "Participants" were John Dewey himself, and his Chinese students which once studied in Normal Institute, Colombia University. And the so-called one kind of "Media" was education publications of that time.Part three inquires into the influence of John Dewey's educational thought of pragmatism on Chinese education. The influence mainly includes three aspects: educational theory, educational institution and educational practice.Part four analyzes intensively and praises moderately the influence of John Dewey's educational thought of pragmatism on Chinese education, furthermore, comes up with several practicable proposals on taking advantage of alien cultures.
