The mode of autonomous learning, whose theoretical and strategic system has been evolving, has been applied in many countries in the world in the past three decades. Sufficient facts and related researches have proved that it is a creative and effective teaching approach, and there has been a growing consensus among researchers about its positive effects. On the basis of related researches at home and abroad and in the light of New National Standard for English Curriculum, the author thinks that the application of this teaching technique or approach can change effectively the traditional grammar-vocabulary-centered English teaching method, which can develop students' English linguistic competence. The method, taking account of students' learning interest, life experience and their cognitive levels, leads to more opportunities of practice, participation, collaboration, and classroom interpersonal communication for students, who will become, in this way, more attached to and active in English learning and cross-cultural communication. The thesis mainly studies the autonomous learning in English teaching in high schools, mostly focus on how to train students to become more autonomous in English learning and how to develop their abilities to take charge of their own learning. Firstly, the thesis reviews related researches and suggests the reasons for encouraging students'autonomous learning. Secondly, it describes the ways of conducting the autonomous learning in English classroom teaching. Thirdly, the thesis describes an experiment that has been carried out in the author's school.
