| Since the opening-up to the outside world , the increasing communication with the outside world has required a large number of people with a good command of English. The ultimate goal of language teaching is to foster the students' ability to communicate in English effectively. Listening, speaking, reading, and writing play important aspects in communication. Now most of the students do better in reading and writing English than in listening and speaking. The students' oral language competence can't keep the closest pace with the rapid development of our modern society, and can't meet the requirement and objectives in the National English Syllabus .We feel sad about our time-consuming and inefficient English teaching. The purpose of English teaching is not to teach students for exams but to enable students to communicate effectively. So it's urgent and important to improve the students' oral abilities through a good and practical way .Interactive Language Teaching(ILT) offers us an unlimited realm of options and ideas for encouraging students to speak and enhancing students' speaking ability. It can encourage students to involve in kinds of oral interactive activities. In this research paper, a brief review of the theory of ILT is given ,which shows interaction is the key to teaching spoken English . The importance of teaching speaking is illustrated. I also investigate the current situation of the spoken English teaching and learning in high schools and analyze why most of senior high school students are poor in spoken English . I try to work out some feasible solutions to help the senior students acquire high oral proficiency through experiments on appropriate strategies and activities which are based on the principles of linguistic interaction. According to the results and analyses of the experiment ,the paper draws a conclusion that ILT is an effective teaching method to improve students' oral competence in high school. |
