It has been proved by the theory and practice of second language acquisition that while the formation and development of one's language competence rely on one's mastery of the knowledge about the language, approaches act as the bridge connecting the knowledge and the competence, showing the essentiality of approaches to English TeachingDuring a more-than-ten-year process of using the new material Senior English for China, a lot of teaching approaches have been explored and experimented with, of which Teaching the Unit as a Whole is one. Much has been discussed about this approach. However, these discussions are merely a collection of the teachers' personal opinions after using the approach, lacking in theoretical support and concrete operating illustration. Furthermore, currently there is not a single book dealing specially with this approach. This leaves much space of further discussion for the article below, which is to make a comparatively comprehensive exploration of this approach theoretically and practically, based on pedagogy and psychology.
