| The thesis, with its focus on 350 sports volunteers attending 10th national sports meeting held in Nanjing city in the year 2005, employs the method of documentation, questionnaire, interview and mathematic statistics to research the motivation of their participation in sports events. Based on the analysis on different factors affecting their motives for the service, this thesis sets out to examine why some volunteers participate in and insist on doing their work, while some bring it to a halt, and the relations between their demands and management, thus providing for sports organizers and administrators a model they should take and an efficient way to motivate and manage volunteers. The conclusions of the research are as follows: Firstly, motives, in addition to personal factors, consist of factors of purpose, interpersonal relationship, social effect, and family: Secondly, each factor has a high and direct effect on the motive, if we list them top-down, they are: purpose, social effect, interpersonal relationship, personal factors as well as familial traditions. Thirdly, seven different varieties concerning their background, combined with motivation, were processed by different comparison in this research. It is found that, besides gender and education, other varieties have significant differences and among the volunteers, 94.5% are interested in voluntary work. Fourthly, the present situation that volunteers are being motivated to participate in large sports events is: volunteers from universities take a big proportion while volunteers from other walks of the whole society hold a small proportion;the work of motivation and management are mainly done by the government, lacking specialized organization and motivational theory;volunteer resource is deficient, lacking stable professional volunteers;interior motivation is much excessive;there are so many contradictions both from the interior and exterior.According to the conclusions of this research, the article points out the measures that must be taken in successfully encouraging and managing volunteers for large sports events held in our country. First, it is suggested to legislate on volunteers, to enhance social security and improve social participation;Second, the motivational mechanism of sport volunteer should be established and the sport volunteer motivation theory be improved;Third, facing all kinds of social volunteer organization, recruiting talents and incorporating experiences, the sport professional volunteer rank should be organized;Fourth, applying external motivation indirectly;Fifth, volunteers' service should be closely connected with self-development in their career, meeting their needs for self-realization;Sixth, there should be a clear division between the responsibilities ofadministrators and volunteers, both of them performing their functions respectively and getting along with each other in good harmony. |
