Cooperative learning is a kind of teaching theory and strategy system. The theory of cooperative learning which is applied in English reading class in high school can change the traditional teacher-centered teaching type. The teacher can make full use of the role as an instructor, while students will be able to do research, work together and make progress in a relaxing atmosphere. It not only trains their abilities of perception and strategy and effectively increases the quality of English reading class, but also is benefit to educate their cooperative consciousness and creative thoughts. The theory has been tried out in English reading class in most classes in our school. It comes to a good result and is popular among teachers and students.Cooperative learning is able to promote students' self-development. Students can educate their consciousness of self-learning by cooperative teaching and learning. They are more active in practicing speaking English and doing varieties of activities in and outside the classroom. But in the past they were used to simply listening to their teacher without thinking and reciting what they had learned. Teachers also turn from knowledge spreaders into instructors in reading activities. They are encouraging students and becoming participants in English reading class. Students aren't confined in what task to finish but demonstrate the processes of finishing tasks, thinking and researching. Because of students' participating in the whole teaching and learning process, they take active part in the learning, thus their corpus functions can be fully developed.In a word, cooperative learning is an advanced theory, which is available to be applied in English reading class in high school. By cooperative learning, students can share in their experience, turn positive learning into active learning and improve their English reading abilities. Meanwhile, this method can sufficiently develop teachers' potential. Teachers and students can both make great progress in the process. This method can promote the efficiency in a reading class where too many students are involved. Furthermore, it gradually educates and trains students' cooperative spirits and makes preparation for students' entering society and further study.Based on the theory of cooperative learning, this paper explores how to put the theory into the practice of promoting the teaching quality of high school English readingclass and aims at establishing a new type of fast and effective student-centered teaching model for this course.
