Generally speaking, cooperative learning (CL) refers to the teaching approach which takes class as heterogeneous and organizes the class in groups to fulfill learning tasks cooperatively; the learning tasks are based on interaction and reciprocal interdependence among the members of group and require mutual help.With the change from teacher-centered to student-centered, from knowledge inputting to the skills developing in language teaching, cooperative learning is receiving more and more attention both home and abroad. The new Curriculum of Guangzhou version English textbook asks for higher demand in training students'English communication skills and participating in classroom. In the situation, the study of cooperative learning (CL) will undoubtedly be of significance.The purpose of this thesis is to study the effect of cooperative learning (CL) in improving students'motivation and achievement in English study, with the example of English reading class. And on this basis, discuss the effect, possibility of applying cooperative learning (CL) in junior middle school English teaching.The research method in this thesis mainly contains literature review, questionnaire survey and teaching experiment. Firstly, the thesis gives a detailed analysis on cooperative learning (CL) through the study on the cooperative learning (CL) theory and its applying both at home and abroad. The thesis develops to the teaching experiment; with students of class (6) and classes (8) of junior one in Guangdong School affiliated Tianhe School as subjects. To know more about students'views, attitudes and tendencies towards teaching methods, classroom organization and involvement of students in English class, questionnaire surveys are also used before and after the experiment.The results of the study show that cooperative learning (CL) is effective in English teaching. By applying cooperative learning (CL), students' interest in learning English has been significantly improved, so is the motivation of English study. The test scores are also improved which is proved by the final term test scores.This thesis also gives a detailed introduction of CL and the studies on it both home and abroad. As expected, this study will hopefully provide some more findings for those who do research in CL and teachers teaching middle school English or other subjects.
