It is commonly believed that a language and the culture embedded in it are closely related. It is impossible to learn a language without considering the related culture. It is becoming more and more significant to know something about English culture when learning English. For peoples of different countries to communicate with each other, if they do not know much about each other's cultures, their conversation would break down easily or misunderstanding would occur. There has been much research on cultural differences and their implications on language teaching. Linguists and language teachers have also realized that solutions to helping language learners to learn English culture when learning the English language are badly needed. Therefore, it is easily seen that in English textbooks at different levels more attention has been paid to cultural factors embedded in English, and language teachers have begun to bring cultural elements to their teaching. However, an agreement on the contents and methods of cultural teaching in language teaching has not been reached. In this study, the main purpose is to figure out how much senior middle school students know about English culture and whether English culture learning and reading competence are correlated in one way or another.By designing test papers, collecting data and analyzing the data using SPSS 11.0, the hypothesis raised has been confirmed, i.e., it is true that not only is culture knowledge related to learners'communicative competence, culture knowledge is also correlated with learners'reading competence. Thus, some insight on culture teaching during language teaching would be exposed and some light upon improving current English learning of senior school students would be shed.
