Foreign language teaching materials (FLTM) play a vital role in reforming foreign language teaching (FLT). In recent years, the evaluation of teaching materials is no longer limited to evaluating the material content itself; the focus is shifted to how the teaching materials are being used. The use of the New Senior English for China teaching material, which serves as the embodiment of the reform of English Teaching has been a great concern in China. This essay aims to investigate whether this new textbook satisfy students'and teachers'needs successfully.However, the studies of English teaching material focused mainly on the introduction of the editing theory and the content. Positivistic studies of the problems, which the teachers and students are faced with when using the new edition, are not sufficient. Therefore, I have made a preliminary investigation on NESFC teaching material in the three middle schools in Changchun city.This paper includes mainly the following four parts: Part I The aims and significance of research and investigation.Part II Literature review of FLT Syllabus. It includes: types of syllabus; the development of syllabus and the general description to NSEFC.Part III The positivistic study. Based upon the literature review, questionnaires were given out as the investigation form to 299 students of the three schools in Changchun city, to find out the present situation and the problems of the NSEFC in use. The results were presented and analyzed.Part IV Reflections and proposals. The responses on the questionnaires indicate that some teachers and students do not fully understand the principles and the teaching methodology of the New Curriculum, and that the Textbooks require improvement as well. Based on my investigation, I have put forward some proposals concerning how to use the textbook.
