With the increase in communication between China and the world and the development of multi-culture, the update of knowledge grows extremely fast, so does the reformation of the fundamental education of China. Chinese Ministry of Education has formulated the New Standard of English Curriculum, which raises new concept and new command for the basic English education. Meanwhile, series of English teaching materials and textbooks have been recompiled under the principle of New English Curriculum.New standard and new materials break the traditional teaching mode, focus much more on improving learners'communicative capability and cultivate their consciousness of different cultures and learning strategy as well. Teachers are hard to avoid inadaptability to the new materials. In this situation, in the direction of new standard, how do teachers adapt to the new materials, and how can they exert the teaching materials most? This thesis takes the New Standard English of Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press for example, uses questionnaires and interview to know about the status of using the materials, concludes some problems and difficulties in using them, and analyzes the reasons for the problems, in order to raise some feasible proposals in allusion to these problems.This paper consists of the following five parts:Introduction: this part contains the significance and value of this research.Chapter One: Background of relative theories, including the definition and the use of teaching materials as well as the theories of investigating the use of teaching materials.Chapter Two: the features and the use of New Standard English of Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, analyzing the content and structure of this series of textbooks and the countrywide use included.Chapter Three: investigation on the use of New Standard English, including questionnaires and interview, collecting and processing data and concluding reflections.Chapter Four: analysis of reasons. Analyze the reasons of the problems that appear in the investigation from the aspects of materials, teachers, students and object factors.Chapter Five: proposals. This thesis concludes the problems reflected in the research, and brings forward some proposals from the aspect of teachers'comprehensive qualifications and how they use materials in carrying out teaching based on the writing tenet.
