| Listening comprehension is hard nut for Chinese middle school students, especially for those in rural areas where input is poor and where teaching facilities are not as easily accessible as they are in cities. However, listening comprehension is very important and attracts as much attention as it should be because it is included in variety of exams including the National College Entrance Examination.This paper aims at providing some information on language learning strategies of middle school students in rural areas in China and discussing their relationship to listening comprehension.After the introduction to the background of the present study, the writer of this thesis first tries to summarize the definitions of learning strategies and categories of learning strategies given by some influential western researchers and Chinese scholars. Secondly, she tries to shift to listening strategies by explaining the process of listening comprehension and the relationship between listening comprehension and listening strategies. Thirdly, she attempts to define strategy training by providing frameworks for strategy training and the teacher's role in strategy training. Fourthly, the theoretical framework of this study is supplied.The survey instruments in this study includes two questionnaires produced by Oxford( 1990 ) and two listening comprehension tests (pre, post tests). The SPSS is employed to analyze data.The results of this study indicate that:1) Students in rural areas apply learning strategies less frequently in their language study than those in cities (in comparison with the results of previous research carried out by other researchers ).2) Students can improve their listening comprehension with the correct skills gained through strategy training as it shows in this study.3) Strategy training increases students' awareness of strategy use.4) There is no availability of fixed model for strategy training.
