Ever since its birth in the 1980s, the concept of "learner autonomy" has long been a hot issue in the field of linguistics both at home and abroad. Substantial research on learner autonomy has hence been carried out and turned out to be fruitful. In the Normal Senior English Curriculum 2003(on trial), the third basic concept is "optimizing the way of learning and fostering ability of autonomous learning". So, the traditional classroom teaching is facing a big challenge and is being replaced by the "learner-centered" one step by step. This urgently demands teachers and grassroots' education authorities to create the prerequisites for autonomous learning to guarantee all the students will improve both in intellect and in overall abilities.This thesis first (Chapter â… ) looks into the possibility of developing autonomy in English learning among senior middle school students by introducing the background of learner autonomy and the previous researches on the learner autonomy. Then the students' autonomous English learning is thoroughly analyzed in the background of English language teaching in China, including its definitions, focuses, the necessity of cultivating the student autonomy in the process of English learning in senior middle school and its operability in teaching in terms of principle and action. After introducing those, (Chapter â…¡)we discuss the necessity of developing learner autonomy on theoretical bases. The first section deals with the issue of psychological and cognitive theories on LA. Then we turn to diverse students individual differences in English learning: motivation and learning strategy.Based on the theoretical inspection of learner autonomy, the thesis (Chapter â…¢) presents an investigation into the current English teaching and learning in senior middle schools, using one questionnaire and some interviews in two different schools, located in Jiang Xi Province. Then (Chapter â…£) we make a measurable analysis of the results gathered in the investigation in relation to the students' autonomous English learning in learning process in three elements: 1.
