In recent years, the theory and practice of autonomous learning in language teaching have been growing significantly. In numerous studies, English autonomous learning can be seen as a learning process or activity or ability. In this article, based on research and related references, autonomous learning is defined as a kind of learning ability that can enable students to make use of learning strategies, under the drive of motivation to learn English effectively. At the same time, the paper cites the Constructivism Theory, the Zone of Proximal Development Theory and Humanism Theory as the theoretical basis. The learning theory of Constructivism points out that knowledge can not be transferred from teachers to students and that students construct their own knowledge. Similarly, Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development can maximize the ability of English autonomous learning. Humanism attaches importance to human development and emphasizes that teachers should help students reach their full potential. It also pays attention to interpersonal relationship between teachers and students and highlights the emotional and attitudinal factors in teaching activities. In this context, this paper does the research on senior high school students’ English autonomous learning ability, which aims to find the current situation and problems of students’ English autonomous learning.
