This study aims to make a pragmatic analysis of teachers' speech acts in English classrooms in middle schools. The research of teachers' speech acts is based on the following theoretical framework. According to Prof. Qian Guanlian(2005), man has to live within fixed speech events (FSE). Prof. Qian Guanlian stated that certain activities match with certain discourse, and the coordination is somewhat stable. The stable coordination of certain activities and discourse contains three elements: 1. the stable speech acts; 2. the stable stages of the movement of certain action; 3. the coordination of the discourse and its basic stages. As a result, in this dissertation, the writer attempts to classify the teaching speech acts into three stages: entries, topic-oriented activities and exits.Furthermore, this research adopts the sociolinguistic and pragmatic approaches, and tries to discover the effective ways for teachers to maintain harmonious atmosphere and achieve successful English teaching.
