| Aesthetic ability is the advanced factor of an individual's ability structure. Middle school students' aesthetic ability is a kind of ability which means that middle school students can perceive, imagine and comprehend the form, structure, content and affective of the arts and nice things around themselves. It can be materialized through three basic aspects, that is, aesthetic apperception, aesthetic imagination and aesthetic comprehension. Studying the middle school students' aesthetic ability is the objective needs of carrying out the Aesthetic Education in middle schools and promoting the healthy development of the students' aesthetic quality. It is also an important task of constructing the psychological theory about the Aesthetic Psychology with Chinese characteristics. Because the research on the middle school students' aesthetic ability is just at the beginning, its achievements are relatively fragmentary. It lays particular stress on speculative exploration. The study that combines theoretical research and empirical method is very poor. There is lack of measurement instrument aimed at middle school students, so it is hard to investigate systematically the developmental characteristics of the middle school students' aesthetic ability.In view of these problems, the purpose of this research is to disclose the structure of the middle school students' aesthetic ability, to compose a questionnaire for them and to explore the developmental characteristics of their aesthetic ability. Document analysis method and questionnaire method are used in this research. The procedures are as follows: first, it finds current related research and constructs a theoretical structure model based on the literature review; secondly, it makes out an initial questionnaire for the middle school students' aesthetic ability according to the structural models and applies it to investigation in order to obtain the empirical structure of the middle school students' aesthetic ability, then forms the formal questionnaire; and finally it surveys the developmental characteristics of the middle school students' aesthetic ability with the self-designed formal questionnaire. After making a research on the aesthetic ability of 435 students from three middle schools in Sichuan province and Chongqing city, we can draw the following conclusions;1. The structure of the middle school students' aesthetic ability is of multi-dimensions and multi-levels including 3 basic dimensions and 12 factors.
