It is difficult for students in China to recognize English words in reading. Though many methods are used to guide the students to recognize words, they have few effects on the students. This paper attempts to make a study of phonics method in word recognition based on experiments and a survey.The study reveals that the phonics method is a basic and effective method in word recognition and that our school teachers should pay attention to the teaching and learning of letter patterns all the time.The present paper is consisted of six chapters:Chapter One is an introduction of word recognition. It has two parts, Firstly ,the importance and need to study word recognition in senior English class. Secondly, the chapter introduces the overall organization of this paperChapter Two is a literature review of word recognition. Different approaches and methods in the study of learners recognizing words are provided respectively. From The Grammar-Translation Method to The Direct Method, from The Audio-Lingual Method to The Communicative Language Teaching Approach and The Multiple Intelligences Theory. The chapter also provides us with the theory of word recognition, giving us a general understanding of word recognition definition and the basic methods.Chapter Three provides us phonics in word recognition, offering us phonics is the effective and basic method in word recognition.Chapter Four narrows down to the main part of this paper—Research and Result. This chapter, which offers a survey of students' knowledge about phonics, has four parts ,with the first one introducing the background of this survey, the second for the methods ,the third providing the result, the fourth explaining the possible the causes of the result.Chapter Five infers some suggestions and implications of the methods of word recognition in the teaching of English in senior English class, and finally this chapter concludes some limitations of this survey.
